The Best of Both Offices
Posted by Jerome | Posted on 21-02-2012

If the average person were able to juggle the careerS of many of todays top artists all the while creating an independent media empire they might sit back and bask in their own glory, and rightfully have the need to do that. They might forget about the 20 hour days, flights across the country and non stop touring that helped them get where they are. Today we are privileged to speak to music industry heavyweight, an individual who has created the careers of many of your favorite artists, and continues to do so today, about being so much more than average. Young Savv aka Savvy Davis Jr has worked with your favorite artist for the past 10 years and has shaped, and saved, more careers than you can imagine. With his ability to define trends, both musically and stylistically, you can see why he has had so much success within the major music industry and why his media empire, Best of Both Offices is primed and ready to return like never before. The questions below don’t deal with sneakers, which he has a mean collection of, or favorite songs - we wanted to know what it takes to have such a storied career, what it was like dropping off “Otis” to Flex @ Hot 97, and whats next for the Best of Both Offices brand.
BTY - Best of Both Offices is planning a relaunch party this upcoming Tuesday for the site. The content on the site is dictated to and for music fans and individuals at the forefront of the music industry. With the landscape of music blogs and information consistently changing, what is the goal of Best of Both Offices as it relates to delivering music and content, that isn’t found on every other site to the masses?
Young Savv - Between myself and my partner Steve “Steve-O” Carless, our goal has always been to do one thing : to create a hub where we can help develop new artist and continue to help the established ones. We’re more of a lifestyle kind of site. We cover the new music and the content that comes out, but we lean more to what the culture is all about, the lifestyle of it. Best Of Both Offices is all about artist development, its the one thing thats missing in today’s music industry. Labels barely do it anymore, and thats what we want our brand/website to stand for.
Having a position at a major record label, but at the same time having an independent media firm gives you a 100% perspective of the industry, that many other people would do anything for. How does working in one world help the other, and vice versa?
Man, its an advantage. Its all about learning and experiencing. Its great because it helps you on both fronts. Something i might learn from working on my personal brand might be something great that i can apply to what i do at Def Jam. Same thing goes for Def Jam, being able to work with executives and learning from their smart minds, I’m able to take pieces of that and apply it to me and Steve’s brand. Nothing is better than both those worlds colliding, I’m very appreciative to be in a position where i can help in both areas.

You’re often cited on sites such as Nahright, 2DopeBoyz, etc and it is rumored that you hand delivered “Otis” to Hot 97 for it to be premiered. You’ve been working your way up the music industry for the past decade and have earned all the acclaim you’ve received - what is it about the industry that has changed for u in making it from a job into a passion?
It has always been a passion from day one. Ever since i was a intern, its been exciting. The best feeling is knowing you work so hard on someone’s project from the ground up and then to see them just blow up. Its a real adrenaline rush! Thats what me and Steve pride ourselves on and thats what we want our brand Best Of Both Offices to stand for. I don’t think that this passion is going anywhere, its something we love doing. I also have to acknowledge the blogs and the djs, they are so important in what me and Steve do. There both one of the real sources of creating groundwork for artist!
As far as the Otis premiere, what a day in history for me. That premiere really came together from one of Def Jam’s Head Honchos, Pecas, inviting me and Steve to come make sure the premiere for Otis went right! We headed down to a hotel to pick the master up from The Throne’s engineer and deliver it right to Funkmaster Flex to make a movie! It was super stressful cause those type of situations just can’t go wrong or your done! We successfully delivered it to Flex and the rest was history all the way to a #1 record. Definitely a day to remember!
We often hear that the music industry is changing so fast, that the physical necessity of a major label is being minimized day by day - essentially the do it yourself work ethic is the whats going to propel the next wave of rappers into superstars. Being that your site serves as a do it yourself portal and a destination where artists want their art highlighted, what is it that kids/artists can learn from YOUR do it yourself experience?
What artist can learn specifically is that it can be done! To often artists feel like it can’t be done and that it is a waste of time, but look at all the current examples of those doing it independent, its so many. Its the new wave. Artists aren’t waiting for someone to get them hot, they are doing it on their own. Their figuring it out by trial and error. This is specifically where someone like me and Steve come into play, we know what to do to help you get hot. We know how long it takes to make that happen, we know the avenues that need to be taken, the i’s that need to be dotted and the t’s that need to be crossed. Its what we take pride in! So our advice is you can do it on your own, and if your feel like you can’t, come see us!
From parties in small bars in Virginia to “Otis” - the Young Sav experience has been a calculated hustle with amazing results. How can that translate some who reads the Best of Both Offices site or to the cat out there that wants a job in the music industry?
That can translate to readers because its a thousand Young Sav’s out there thats doing what i use to do or what i been doing and understand that hustle. Understand the things they see on the site because they are just like me or Steve. We all have a story to tell and we all have a sense of what we like. People that go to our site will understand our brand, understand what we stand for and respect it. Our site’s goal is to give the reader quality and develop their minds to understand what our brand brings to the game.

With the return of BOBO site and the party, which has a CRAZY lineup, what can we expect in the future?
Expect the future to be bright. Me and Steve are working on some things that have never been done before to add to our artist development brand! Too big to even talk about! Just expect us to continue to try to help shape our culture. Expect us to try to be more inventive and to push ourselves to do bigger things. As far as we look at it, we feel like we aren’t no where near our potential and that we have such a long way to go. Except a consistent 2012 from us!
Thanks for these questions, I just want to shout out those on the BoBO team that deserve the credit for helping me and Steve reach our potential! Shout out to Matt Ferrigno, Manny, Alex, New York Nyck, Tim Glover, E.P. & Shari Bryant!
